AEC From the Ground Up: Software Strategy: CAD Options for AEC
Feb 1, 2005
By: H. Edward Goldberg, AIA
Last month's column discussed the major BIM (building information modeling) software packages in the AEC arena. This month we focus on a range of other CAD products for AEC design. Many of these products have the advantages of lower prices and less complexity, which makes them easier to learn and to operate.

AEC From the Ground Up: Manage AEC Projects Online
Dec 15, 2004
By: H. Edward Goldberg, AIA
Effective cost control and timely completion of projects are vital in the construction industry. Today's construction market is highly competitive, driving profit margins down as risks increase. In this climate, one failed project can wipe out an entire year's profit. A project-based industry that depends on the accuracy of daily decisions needs solutions that provide competitive advantages in the field and in the office.
Autodesk Revit 7
Nov 1, 2004
By: H. Edward Goldberg, AIA
Less than one year after the last major release, Autodesk announced Revit 7, the latest update to its parametric building modeler. I reviewed a prerelease version of this program, as well as the Revit-based structural engineering and MEP engineering applications that are currently in beta release. I must admit that I am impressed.

The Architect's Answer
January 1, 2004
By: H. Edward Goldberg, AIA
Only a few AEC and multimedia software programs are elegant-they perform as advertised, are easy to learn, and have a good price point. SketchUp 3.0 from @Last Software is one of these programs. It's been at the top of my annual "Essential Presentation Tools" column, May 2003, along with Adobe Photoshop and PowerPoint, since it arrived on the scene three years ago.
